NWT High School Hockey Championships

The 12th Annual NWT High School Hockey Tournament will take place in Hay River during the weekend of Dec 4th, 5th & 6th, 2009. The Junior Varsity division will include those students born no earlier than 1994 (15 & under as of Dec. 31st, 2009) and the Senior Varsity division will consist of those full time students born no earlier than 1990 (19 & under as of Dec. 31st, 2009).

The registration fee for this year is $450.00 per team and the damage deposit for the room will be $300.00.  Breakfast will be provided on the Saturday and Sunday morning.  There will be team MVP prizes awarded after each game, along with Gold, Silver and Bronze prizes at the tournament’s end.  There will be awards for MVP, Top Goalie, Top Defenseman and Most Sportsmen like.

Confirmation of participation must be received prior to Friday November 20th. A draft schedule will be faxed to all schools on Friday, November 27th guaranteeing each team a minimum of 3 games. All teams should be in town by Friday, December 4th as there are games scheduled that day. Accommodations will be provided at Diamond Jenness High School.

A complete team list along with numbers and coaches names will need to be faxed to Tim Borchuk or JJ Hirst at (867) 874-3163 by Friday, November 27th.  Team rosters must be verified by the principle as to having fulltime students in good standings. This information is needed to complete insurance requirements for all participants and coaches through Risk Management.  In order for this insurance to take effect, all players have to be fully equipped, including neck guard, mouth guard and full face shields.  All players must also be registered with Hockey North, either through minor hockey or senior hockey.  All games will be officiated by qualified CAHA referees under minor hockey rules.  These rules will be strictly enforced along with a few additions:
1)No body checking;
2)Zero tolerance for foul language (10 minute misconduct)
3)Zero tolerance for verbal abuse towards fellow players and referees (game misconduct);
4)Any intent to injure or fighting will result in a tournament suspension; and
5)A game misconduct will result in a one game suspension.
6)No center red line for the purpose of off-sides.

Games will consist of 2 - 25 minute periods.  The clock will stop for goals and penalties only. If the score is within 3 goals in the last 5 minutes of play in the second period all stoppages will be stop time.  A 10 minute warm-up will be provided along with a 2 minute break between periods.  A default will result if a team is more than 10 minutes late for their scheduled game.  The mercy rule will be in effect; the game will be over if one team is behind by 7 or more goals after the first period or any time thereafter.

Tie breakers in the Round Robin will be decided by the following:

1.Number of wins
2.Head to head play
3.Goals against
4.Penalty minutes
5.Toss of a coin

Ties in the play-off rounds will be decided by the following:

1.5 minute , 4 on 4 over time
2.3 men shoot out
3.Sudden death shoot out, all players must be utilized.  Repeat shooter after the complete team roster has participated.
